Laurits Sunde - Etnografica Galleri Copenhagen
1910-1979
Laurits Sunde, more familiarly known as Lau, was a pioneer in the introduction of African art to Denmark, as well as to the Nordic countries. He was particularly renowned for his deep passion for the Ibeji, the iconic twin statues of the Yoruba culture.
Lau distinguished himself through his dedication to promoting the understanding and appreciation of these works, not merely as art objects, but more importantly, as living symbols of the spiritual beliefs and ritual practices surrounding twins among the Yoruba. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the ere ibeji represented, for Sunde, a window into the soul of a society where twins are seen as sacred figures, endowed with powers capable of influencing the fate of their families.
Thanks to his influence, the Ibeji have gained significant recognition in the Nordic art scene, valued both for their cultural significance and for the profound traditions they embody.
